Old Faithful Shop

The cold short days of winter make many of us dream of a smooth-sanded beach south of the equator. It’s hard not to start thinking about summer and plan ahead for a nice vacation abroad. We Canadians are usally tempted by far off places, but some of the best vacations can be had in this vast countryside without having to take out a passport.

Newfoundland is one of those places that feels like nowhere else. The above videos do a great job of capturing the spirit of the place. Watch the above videos and think about booking a summer retreat to the jagged rocks of Newfoundland: A world away so close to home.

Ferrowatt, based in Vienna, Austria, has been producing these signature filament bulbs for well over a hundred years. Today they are still made according to Thomas Edison’s standards: original molds are used and each tip is hand exhausted.
The move away from the incandescent bulb has spawned stiff legislation here in British Columbia and although we do advoacte energy efficiency, we feel moderation is the key. Thankfully the ferrowatt bulbs fall within the designated wattage. We feel the warm glow that the amber filaments produce draw us in like moths to a flame. They really can set the right mood to a room and provide the perfect accent.
The bulbs, when paired with our reproduction industrial trouble lights, have a captivating effect. Our cage lamps plug into a regular socket and can add a great feature to your room with the ease of installing a hook to hang it from. They look great lying on a table too. Both the bulbs and the cage lamps are now available online.

Portlandia, a new television show featuring Fred Armisen(SNL) and Carrie Brownstein(Sleater Kinney), aired its first episode this past Friday and we think it’s pretty hilarious. Set in beautiful Portland, the show pokes fun at the cultural capital where the dream of the 90’s never died. We especially love the “Put A Bird On It” skit above.

Of course, the show isn’t airing in Canada, but you can find episode one on the world wide web if you look hard enough. In the meantime, head over to the Portlandiawebpage to see some more clips.

We’re big fans of old packaging and especially old tins. From coffee to cookies, from motor oil to shoe polish: these tins all had simple designs and great colour choices that we can’t get enough of. Plus, the years of use have brought lovely dings and scratches which only add to their worth.
We were recently lucky to come across a small batch of old cigarette tins. They come from a time when smoking was allowed on airplanes and in hospitals, and although we do think that things have changed for the better, it’s the tins themselves that we find quite striking and obviously durable.
We’ve repurposed a small batch as journal holders complete with pencil and eraser. No more digging around the rucksack for all these things - they’ll be stored in one place when you need ‘em.
Available online here.

They’re back! Now available both in-store and online. We sold out really quick last time and had a few sad faces show up a little too late. So find the right spot in your place to hang it and drop in and grab one soon.
